Badgers Gold has been around since 2010 and is a registered brand name that focuses on quality over quantity. It is family-owned and operated to give the ultimate 'direct from the farmer' experience, quality and taste! Badgers Gold prides itself in selling ONLY local South African raw honey (nothing added, nothing taken away), as well as other selected hive products.

PROCESS

Our raw honey process begins with the natural flowers that the bees visit. We don't have any control over this critical phase, which keeps us humble and makes us utterly dependent on what nature does during a season.

Frames of honey comb are taken from the wooden bee hives to the extraction facility and processed in the most economical way by spinning them in a centrifuge. The extracted honey is allowed time to settle naturally and then bottled thereafter.

Behind the glamorous jar of honey lies a hidden (very unglamorous!) dirty, sticky, sweaty, back-bending hands-on process that no machine apart from the human body can do, coupled with theft, vandalism, drought, loss of habitat, fires etc.

Badgers Gold raw South African honey is owner-harvested by a family-owned beekeeping operation and can in no way be compared to irradiated imports or other unethical mixtures on the market. ORIGIN

Bee hives are managed within the borders of the Eastern and Western Cape in the hope of obtaining one good harvest from them each year (although some years nature does keep the honey for herself). Our region is not a high honey producing area, therefore honey is precious both to us and the bees. A big part of our ethical management technique involves ensuring the bees are left with enough honey stores (not sugar water) for winter . Bees collect only natural South African nectar from flowers and then turn it into honey. We DO NOT BLEND HONEY from other or imported sources.

Honey is produced sustainably and is of organic origin from natural areas. We are, however, not organic certified. A small portion of honey products is crop-based and is labelled as such. We are content with the conviction that quality will sell and build a good reputation for itself. We are simply not interested in mass quantities and don't feel pressured to buy honey from other sources if we are sold out and can't supply our clients.

HISTORY

Many consumer food products started in the kitchen with a dream and a passion, and even though our produce originates from nature, the bottling process also started in the kitchen, with a dream and a passion.

Many years went by during which the honey bottling was shaped as it made its way into jars , without the product having a real name, the label just saying "raw honey" with some relevant information.

Around 2010 the name, Badgers Gold, was born. Labels were kept simple in black and white, but living in a rainbow nation, we thought adding some colour into our lives would be a great idea for the future. We've held on to the quality over quantity principle since the beginning and we're thankful that God has always provided for us.

Our goal is to deliver honey as it comes from the hives; not adding anything or taking anything away in the process, making the route from the hives to your table as short as possible. Since 2010 many other products and hive produce have been added to the catalogue.
